Is BCCI looking for a new ODI captain of India? Is Virat Kohli losing the hot seat of the captain of India for the ODI format? That is the biggest question of Indian cricket right now.

Who will be the next captain of India for ODI?

Captain of India for ODI: Plan of BCCI

He had already left the leadership of T20. However, if all goes well, Kohli could be removed from the captain of India for the ODI on behalf of the board. The board will officially announce the change after the World Cup. After the World Cup, India will play three T20s at home against New Zealand this November. Rohit Sharma may be the leader in that series.

Board officials will sit down with the national selectors during the World Cup. There will be a detailed discussion on the future of Virat Kohli’s leadership. In that discussion, it will be final to remove Kohli as the captain of India for ODI’s.

The biggest complaint of Kohli’s leadership is that despite a long time, the team has not been able to win an ICC tournament. Despite India’s success in the bilateral series, the trophy of the ICC tournament is the biggest minus point led by Khara Kohli.

Board Secretary Joy Shah and President Sourav Ganguly will hold a virtual meeting with the national selectors during the T20 World Cup. This issue will be discussed at that meeting.

India has no ODI series this year. In 2022, India will play a handful of ODIs as well. Besides, India will have to play another T20 World Cup in Australia also.

There is such a possibility, After the World Cup, Rohit Sharma can rest without playing a T20 series against New Zealand. A board official told the Associated Press: “First of all, let’s the selector to pick the team for the New Zealand series first. Rohit has not yet informed the team management about the rest. Besides, why should he think of resting now? He will play his first captaincy against New Zealand.”

However, he may withdraw from the Tests against New Zealand in Kanpur (November 25-29) and Mumbai (December 3-6). There is a possibility that those who will be rested in the T20 series may play in the Test series. Again, those who will play in the T20 series will be given a break in the test series against South Africa. The India-South Africa series starts at the end of December this year.

Captain of India for ODI: Next ODI series

India will have to play only three ODIs in the upcoming home season. That too against the West Indies in February. According to sources, the board wants to go with a two-year master plan before the 2023 ODI World Cup. So there is no hurry to announce the new captain of India for ODI right now. The board does not want to share leadership in limited-overs cricket. India will play 16 T20 matches by the end of June next year.

It remains to be seen whether Kohli will voluntarily relinquish the lead in ODI cricket before the ODI series against South Africa or wait for the board’s announcement. Although, Kohli himself has realized that his day’s captain of India for the ODIs have come to a close.

Captain of India for ODI: Captaincy records of Kohli

In 2012 following his outstanding performance in Australia, Kohli was named vice-captain for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. After Dhoni got an injury during the first ODI of the triangular series in the West Indies, Kohli replaced him as captain. India lost by one wicket in that match. Later Dhoni was ruled out of the series, with Kohli taking over as captain for the remaining matches.

Still now, Kohli leads India in 95 ODI’s. As ODI captain, Virat Kohli has guided India to 65 ODI victories and lost in 27 matches. His winning percentage is 70.45. After MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, and M Azharuddin, he is India’s fourth most successful ODI captain India.

After MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli has the second-highest runs as India’s ODI captain (5320). As India’s ODI captain, Dhoni scored a total of 6641 runs in 200 ODI matches.

He holds the record for the most ODI hundreds by an Indian captain. Kohli is second just to Ricky Ponting, who led Australia to 22 centuries during his time as captain.

But despite having very good ODI captaincy records Virat Kohli is facing such a situation.
