Virender Sehwag: The first T20 Captain of India

The Indian cricket team played its first t20 international match on December first, 2006. Who was the first Indian cricket captain for the T20? The name of the first Indian T20 international captain is Virender Sehwag.

India played their first T20 match against South Africa. In a dramatic situation, South Africa scored 126 runs. India chased down that. Captain Sehwag scored 34 runs in 29 balls. But the real hero of that match was Dinesh Karthik. He scored 31 of 28 balls in a very crucial time of that match. India won by six wickets with one ball remaining.

That was the only match Sehwag captained India in T20 International. So as a captain, he has 100 per cent winning records in T20.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Most Successful Captain of India

Dhoni gave us all the pride movement in t20 as the Indian team captain.

At 26 years 32 days, Dhoni appeared as a captain of the India cricket team in the 2007 T20 world cup. He leads India for the next nine years. Under his captaincy, India won the first-ever t20 world cup in 2007. Although, Dhoni made his captaincy debut against Scotland. That game was not played due to rain. From there, he led India to the ICC World Twenty 20 trophy in South Africa, defeated over arch-rivals Pakistan in an intensely fought final on September 24, 2007. Dhoni became the second Indian captain to have won a World Cup in any format of cricket after Kapil Dev.

From then, the Dhoni era started as a captain of India. But, in 2009, 2010, and 2012 ICC men’s T20 world cup, India did not have a memorable outing.

In 2014 in Bangladesh, India played final under MS Dhoni. But India lost against Sri Lanka. The next ICC T20 world cup was playing in India. Everyone was expecting that India shall retain the cup after nine years. But in the semi-final against West Indies, India lost the match.

Dhoni’s last game as captain of India in the T20 International was against the West Indies. India Played that series in the United States in 2016. India lost the first game.

And the second match was called off due to rain in the second innings. Dhoni’s final T20 International as India’s captain took place in the United States.

Between 2007 to 2016, MS Dhoni leads India in 72 matches in T20 International. India won 41 and lost 28 out of that 72 matches. There are two no-result and one tie game.

Suresh Raina: T20 Captain of India for one series

Suresh Raina is in the third position on this list as the T20 captain of the India cricket team. In Indian cricket, Raina is known as Mr IPL for his performance for CSK in IPL. The attacking left-handed batsman is one of the star performers of Indian cricket in T20 former.

He is the first batsman who scored a century in T20 cricket. In the 2010 ICC T20 world cup, Raina scored the century against South Africa. Batting first, Raina came to the crease in the first over of the match. He played a quickfire 101 in 60 balls. Raina smashed five sixes and nine fours in that inning.

Suresh Raina was named captain of the Indian T20 International team for the first time in 2010. Raina has only captained India in three Twenty20 Internationals against Zimbabwe in July that year. Ajinkya Rahane is the fourth T20 captain of the India cricket team. Rahane, the current vice-captain of the Indian Test squad, has been an excellent second-choice for the captaincy of the Indian cricket team. Kohli is the only skipper to have won more games than Asghar Afghan (42), MS Dhoni (42), Eoin Morgan (37), and Sarfaraz Ahmed (29).

Rohit Sharma: Proved the ability as the captain of India in T20

Rohit Sharma is the present vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in limited over cricket. Virat Kohli has already announced that he will not continue as T20 captain after the T20 world cup, 2021. After the ICC world cup, Rohit Sharma expected to take over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team for the T20 Internationals.

In white-ball cricket, Sharma has proven his worth as a skipper multiple times. In the absence of Kohli, Sharma has served as a captain of India in white-ball cricket since 2017. He had a fantastic record as the T20 captain of the Indian cricket team. On 20th December 2017 at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack Rohit went for toss captain of India for the first time. It was not a good show with the bat for the new captain.

But in the next match at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore ‘The Hitman’ of cricket created history with the bat. Rohit Sharma scored 118 runs in just 43 balls. He smashed 12 fours, and ten sixes on that inning are the joint-fastest T20 International century ever. In the 19 games as the T20 captain, Sharma has seven half-centuries and two centuries. He has a batting average of 41.88 and has scored 712 runs as captain.

Rohit Sharma has captained in 19 matches for India in T20 format. India has won 15 among them. Under his leadership, India has only lost four T20Is. Rohit Sharma has a victory percentage of 78.94 as captain.

Shikhar Dhawan: Oldest T20 Captain of India

Shikhar Dhawan is the 7th player who got the honour of captain of India cricket team in T20I. AT 35 years and 232 days, Shikhar Dhawan is now the oldest Indian to make T20 captaincy debut. He made his T20 debut as captain of India against Sri Lanka on Colombo (RPS), 25 July 2021. Shikhar Dhawan scored 46, and India won the match handsomely. But India lost the next two. He has the winning percentage as captain of the India cricket team is 33.33, which is the lowest among all seven captains of India for the T20 format.
